In the Shangri-la series, I create kinetic sculptures that combine living plants with mechanical systems. A longing for nature, continually overridden by comfort and convenience, appears as forms of control imposed on the living. Over time, changes such as plant growth and dieback—as well as deviation and breakdown within the mechanical system—sometimes unravel these relations of dominance from within.
