This project in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn. The Gowanus Canal, once a major center of industrial activity during the 19th and 20th centuries, became known as one of the most heavily polluted waterways in the United States, contaminated by heavy metals and industrial waste. Although efforts to clean and restore the canal are ongoing, its history of environmental degradation remains deeply embedded in the identity of the area. For this project, I collect found objects―relics and discarded materials―from Gowanus and use water sourced from the canal to cultivate crystal sculptures. Through this process, I seek to give visual form to the fading memories of Gowanus and the human narratives that have shaped it. New York City, surrounded by rivers and the sea, holds many neighborhoods with rich, water-related histories beyond Gowanus. By expanding this project into other areas such as Dumbo, South Street Seaport, and the wetlands of Staten Island, I aim to further explore the points where human intervention and nature’s regenerative power intersect, revealing the layered history of the urban environment.

このプロジェクトをブルックリンのゴワナスで実施した。かつて産業活動の中心地だったゴワナス運河は、最もひどく汚染された水路のひとつとなっていた。この地域を回復させるために現在も清掃が続けられている。 このプロジェクトのために、私はゴワナス運河から採取した水と、この地域で拾ったオブジェを使って「Pillar of Salt」を制作した。この作品は、ゴワナスの自然に対する人間の介入の重層的な歴史（過去の汚染、現在の浄化の努力、そして自然の永続的な再生力）を視覚化しようとするものである。 川と海に囲まれたニューヨークには、ゴワナス以外にも水にまつわる豊かな歴史を持つ地域がたくさんある。ダンボ、サウス・シーポート、スタテン島の湿地帯といった地域は、このプロジェクトをさらに探求するためのユニークな文脈を提供してくれる。これらの場所と関わることで、自然の再生力と人間活動の歴史的痕跡との相互作用を照らし出すことを目指している。
